A capital affair: QT Canberra
Right in the heart of Canberra’s CBD along the London Circuit, you’ll find the very artsy QT Canberra, a sleek designer hotel overlooking Lake Burley Griffin. In a previous life, it was known as the Rydges Lakeside – but stepping into the renovated foyer and rooms, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a brand new hotel.
Sleek and just that little bit sexy, you’ll be greeted by a red carpet and some delightful background music as you enter. The QT Canberra really takes the whole ‘political epicenter of Australia’ theme to heart – because everywhere you turn, the decor and accessories are decked out to remind you that yes, you’re a short drive away from Parliament. Trippy colourful kaleidoscopes featuring past PMs pepper the wallpapers, and a very life-like Barack Obama cut-out figure lurks in the doorway of one of the downstairs bars. Step into the elevators and you have paparazzo stalking your every move – and the room stationary feature a few choice Aussie political quotes. Even the room keys have familiar ex-PMs on the face.
Speaking of your rooms – they’re filled with art deco decor, most of which you can buy, if you like it enough. Each room also comes complete with it’s own cocktail making kit, so if you’ve got an inkling for an Old Fashioned, you can certainly start mixing one for yourself while playing a round of pick up sticks or thoughtfully provided intimates kit amongst the usual, if quirky, mini-bar items.
In terms of facilities, the usual female-leaning beauticians and hairdressers are nowhere to be seen. Instead, discerning gentleman can find themselves getting pampered and groomed at the Barber Shop, located on the ground floor, complete with antique leather barber chairs, traditional wet shaves and beard trims, and all served with whiskey neat. There’s a speakeasy in the hotel too, giving you a nice location to share a drink and show off your new hairdo and beard-style with mates.
Breakfast is served in Capitol Bar & Grill as a gorgeous continental buffet spread in the morning, with options to suit every taste. It’s impeccably styled as well – almost to the point where you don’t want to touch anything. The bar is also open for lunch and dinner, offering Italian favourites teamed with prime cut steaks on a wood fired grill.
Overall, the QT Canberra is a very sleek and sexy hotel which plays up its theme very well – and damn, we really should have bought those modernist tumblers in the bathroom.
